Much like your clothes, spring is a good time to update your skincare routine with products more suited to the warmer and sunnier days. Keep reading to find out how you can update your beauty routine with a few simple steps. I’m also sharing my favorite products for each step.
As a disclaimer, I’m not a licensed dermatologist or esthetician. These are tips and recommendations that I’ve learned over my years of learning from the experts, and from first-hand experience. You should always consult an expert prior to testing out a new skincare routine.
SWITCH TO A LIGHTER MOISTURIZER
Regardless of your skin-type, MOST people tend to get more oily in the warmer months, which isn’t surprising considering the temps increase and you’re sweating more. So, you’ll want to look for a lighter moisturizer. This also goes for your body too. There’s nothing I hate more than putting lotion on my legs in the summer, and then having them be greasy or sweating. So, save your heavier creams for nighttime, and apply a lighter moisturizer during the days. Below are a few I love.
INCREASE SPF
Hopefully you’re already wearing SPF on the reg, but if you aren’t, now is the time to add it to your routine. Did you know one of the number one causes of premature aging is sun damage? So layer on that SPF. You also want to make sure you’re thinking about all areas of your body including your lips, neck and hands.
Bonus tip: It’s recommended that you use the same products that you use on your face, on your hands and neck because those are two areas that people often forget about and are usually a dead giveaway for age. Trust me. You don’t want your face looking snatched and your hands and neck looking wrinkled. I’ve seen it. She ain’t cute.
ADD A SELF TANNER
I know self tanning can be intimidating for a lot of people, but if you’re looking to get a golden glow, it’s really the best option vs. laying in the sun and aging. Tons of tanning tips on my Instagram or I have several blog posts that cover off on it.
SWITCH YOUR PERFUME TO A LIGHTER SCNET
I have a few signature scents that I will wear all year round, and then I have a few scents that I love breaking out for spring because they’re lighter, fresher and more floral than the warm and sultry scents I wear in fall and winter. Just for reference, I tend to like bolder scents that are warm and a little sweet, but also a little masculine. I can’t do full floral scents.
START EXFOLIATING (IF YOU AREN’T)
Whether it’s a physical or chemical exfoliator, I always recommend one in your routine. Spring is the perfect time to incorporate into your routine so that you can get off any of the dead and dry winter skin, which can make your skin look dull and flaky. Also, your skin can usually handle an exfoliator better in the more mild climate.
SIMPLIFY YOUR ROUTINE
Quarantine aside, you’re probably on-the-go much more in warmer months so create a routine with products that have duel purposes. For example, I like to use my bronzer on my face, but also through my crease or all over my lids for quick eyeshadow. The same can be done with liquid and highlighting products.
WASH YOUR MAKEUP + BRUSHES
I probably sound like a broken record, always reminding people to wash their brushes, but it really is so important, and it’s always shocking to me when I find out how long people go without washing them. Let’s think about this for a a second. Think about how long you’ve had one of your face powders. Now think about how many brushes have dipped into that powder, onto your face, back into the powder, probably dropped the brush onto the floor and back into the powder…. Do you get where I’m going with this? Gross things are happening on your brushes and makeup, so you should be cleaning regularly If you’re someone who suffers from acne you definitely want to be cleaning your brushes more to reduce the risk of spreading bacteria. INCORPORATE ANTIOXIDANTS
Incorporating antioxidants, like Vitamin C, are great in the warmer months because unlike other products, Vitamin C plays well with the sun. Actually, they help decrease sun damage and neutralize free radicals from UV radiation. It also helps with any hyperpigmentation that you may have from previous sun damage.
