Growing up, I was a chronic nail biter. I would pick at nails until they would bleed. Nothing worked. My mom tried painting my nails with that stuff that tasted like crap and would even bride me with allowance if I let them grow. (Apparently biting my nails was more important than money for a new Limited Too shirt lol)
When I got a little older, I decided I wanted them to look nice so I got acrylic nails, which nail my nails so brittle and weak. If you’ve had acrylics before, you know you get to a point when you just can’t keep up with them and need to give your nails a little rest. It was at that point that I decided I needed to actually put some work into keeping my nails healthy. I honestly didn’t think my nail beds would ever grow past the halfway point, but this is what I’ve done for years now to keep them healthy.
1. Stop filing them
Filing your nails weakens the ends and makes them prone to breakage. If you’re trying to grow them out, just let them grow, and shape them when they get to the length you like. If you’re like me, it might drive you crazy for a few weeks because they aren’t perfectly shaped, but it’s worth it.
2. Keep your cuticles hydrated
Healthy nails start at your cuticles. Applying a cuticle oil will not only keep your nails hydrating, helping eliminate breakage, but it will also help eliminate any hang nails or rough cuticles that you’ll want to pick at.
3. Don’t pick your polish
I know, it’s so satisfying to pick off your polish, especially if you’re able to get the whole nail off in one peel, but don’t! When you do this, you’re actually ripping off the top layers of your nail.
4. Use acetone-free remover
Acetone is the ingredient that removes your polish quickly, but it’s really harsh and drying to your nails and skin. I use acetone to remove my gel polish (and really make sure to hydrate after), because it’s better than peeling it off, but not for removing regular polish.
5. Try a gel manicure
Gel manis are meant to last for a couple weeks. This means you aren’t constantly applying removers, messing with your cuticles and filing. The gel acts a hard outer layer that helps resist against breaking. Whenever my nails are really long, I always wear gel because it makes them so much more durable. If you don’t feel like shelling out the money at a salon, try doing it at home! It’s a so much more affordable, and the learning curve isn’t that big.
6. Keep tools handy
I know I said earlier try not to file, but if it’s between you picking at your nail or filing, take care of what’s bothering you. I keep nail files and cuticle clippers in my desk at work, nightstand and makeup table. That way I can easily take care of any annoyances, and I’m not forced to rip a hang nail.

Nicole
